Product Designer, Customer Engagement Platform 
 

The location:

Melbourne, Australia (Hybrid Work Arrangement) 

 

About you and the role:
 

As a Product Designer with a proven track record working with digital SaaS products, you will occupy a critical role in the product development lifecycle of the Descartes Customer Engagement Platform, an advanced automated notification and engagement platform that connects businesses with their customers to inform and empower them with information and features to make the ‘last mile’ of logistics a seamless success.  


You will work with a close-knit home Product Team as well as other passionate teams across the world, participating in and sometimes leading key activities in the product development lifecycle. 


Your experience working with product professionals and engineers puts you in the perfect position to collaborate and develop design responses, often to complex problems, and incept these with the team for delivery. 


You are data driven, valuing the time taken to research technologies, trends, and user behaviour, as well as identifying lead and lag measures of success. You know when to employ the right method to test an assumption or gather missing information. 


In this role you will not just craft interfaces; you will be visual storyteller, collaborating with other passionate team members to shape experiences that leave a lasting impact on users and drive tangible outcomes. 

 

Your responsibilities:

 

  1. User-Centered Design: 

  • Conduct research and document user needs, behaviors, and pain points 

  • Develop rich personas that guide design and product discovery efforts 

 

  1. Design Thinking: 

  • Advocate for design thinking and user-centric approaches that are driven by real user research and insights, and incorporate them into the product development process 

  • Apply design thinking principles to solve complex problems, taking people on the journey of problem understanding and discovery 

 

  1. Collaboration: 

  • Work closely with product managers, engineers, and other stakeholders. 

  • Ensure design decisions align with business goals and user needs. 

  • Participate in, and often lead, cross-functional workshops and design sprints, taking in feedback to enhance designs 

  • Produce high fidelity assets and incept them with engineering teams to enable delivery 

 

  1. Prototyping and Testing: 

  • Create interactive prototypes to validate design concepts. 

  • Conduct user research, usability testing, and A/B experiments. 

  • Iterate on designs based on data-driven insights. 

 

  1. Design Systems: 

  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of design systems. 

  • Ensure consistency across products and features. 

 

  1. Continuous Learning: 

  • Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices. 

  • Participate in and contribute to portfolio- and company-level design Communities of Excellence 

 

 

Your qualifications:

 

  • Tertiary qualification in digital design, multimedia or similar. 

  • Proven experience as a product designer, preferably in SaaS or digital products. 

  • Proficiency with design tools (e.g., Sketch, Figma, Adobe XD). 

  • Strong portfolio showcasing user-centered design work. 

  • Excellent communication skills and ability to articulate design decisions, with the ability to work effectively with diverse teams across different time zones. 

  • Familiarity with logistics technology platforms, warehouse management systems, or transportation management systems is desirable. 

 

 

The location and work arrangements:
 

You must be based in Melbourne, Australia, however the role also has a very flexible, hybrid working arrangement - work from home and from our centrally located working space in the heart of the Melbourne CBD. 
 

While there may be some in-person meetings and events, most of your work can be done remotely, giving you the best of both worlds. 


Working with clients and teams worldwide will sometimes require flexibility with working hours, however there are opportunities to embed new and improved ways of communicating effectively to bridge time zones and foster sustainable
